Originally from Panama, Dr.Ildaura Murillo-Rohde was a psychiatric nurse who graduated from the Medical and Surgical Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. After completing her undergraduate degree at Columbia University Teachers College, she began her career as a psychiatric nurse. In 1974, she was named the first Hispanic Associate Dean of Nursing at the University of Washington, and she was appointed Dean of Nursing at the State University of New York. After receiving her degree from Columbia, she held numerous academic and research positions, including a position as Dean of Nursing at the State University of New York.

In addition to her career as a psychiatric nurse, she was an accomplished author. She contributed to the growing literature on Hispanic culture. Her works include The Addict as an Inpatient, published in 1963, and Family Life Among Mainland Puerto Ricans in the Slums of New York City in 1976. Her research also included contributions to Chicano Aging and Mental Health and Cultural Perspectives in Family Therapy.

Educator

The late nurse educator, Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, earned a reputation for excellence in the field of psychotherapy. She worked as a nursing educator and a professor at the State University of New York and later served as the Dean of the School of Nursing. She held prestigious positions, including the American Academy of Nursing and WHO psychiatric consultant to Guatemala. In addition, she served as a permanent UNICEF representative.

After earning her doctorate from New York University, Dr. Murillo-Rohde worked in nursing in diverse settings, promoting cultural awareness and nursing as a career. She founded the Spanish-speaking/Spanish surname nurses’ Caucus and served as its first president. In 1975, she helped form the National Association of Hispanic Nurses. Her work has influenced future generations of nurses.

Organizational administrator

Although her net worth is unknown, many have speculated that it ranges from $1 million to $5 million. In fact, her many works have garnered her a respectable amount of money. She served in a number of positions, from the Dean of Nursing at SUNY Downstate Medical Center to the position of WHO psychiatric consultant to Guatemala. The day before her 90th birthday, Murillo-Rohde passed away in Panama.

Born in Panama, Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde was a professor, nurse, and academic who was recognized for her contributions to the Hispanic community. She also served as a professor and tennis instructor and founded the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, which was later named in her honor. While she was not famous for her work, she did manage to make an impact on the United States.

Expert in psychotherapy

A prominent psychotherapist with a wealth of experience, Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde was not only a renowned clinician, but a prominent member of society as well. She served as the World Health Organization’s psychiatric advisor to the Guatemalan government, where she also launched a pilot programme to train employees in the provision of psychiatric care. A psychologist and a professor, Murillo-Rohde was also an advocate for UNICEF. Unfortunately, her death occurred on September 5, 2010, in Panama, at age 89.

She was the founder of NAHN and an expert in marriage and family therapy. In addition to her professional work, Murillo-Rohde also held numerous academic and research positions. After completing her PhD, she became the permanent UNICEF representative and a psychiatric consultant to Guatemala. Her humanitarian work and commitments also made her a highly sought-after speaker.
