The Jeep Grand Cherokee Is a Powerful Mid-Size SUV

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the most capable mid-size SUVs in the market today. Its base V6 engine offers ample power for everyday driving, including merging and passing on the highway. The more powerful V8 engine adds authority to the Grand Cherokee’s drive, but its fuel economy is a concern for many consumers. The V6 engine manages 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The plug-in hybrid powertrain, on the other hand, achieves 14/20 mpg city/highway, while the V8 engine gets a more powerful and authoritative ride.

5.7-liter HEMI V8 gasoline engine

The 5.7-liter HEMI V8 gasoline in your Jeep Grand Cherokee is a powerful powerhouse that delivers excellent performance. The engine delivers 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. It is capable of towing up to 7,200 pounds. It also uses aluminum cylinder heads and has dual spark plugs. All of this helps the engine run more efficiently while reducing emissions. The 5.7-liter HEMI engine also has cylinder deactivation system (MDS), which turns off fuel to four cylinders.

This high-performance gas engine is also known for its hemispherical combustion chambers, a hallmark of Chrysler Group engines. The 5.7-liter HEMI V8 gasoline engine in Jeep Grand Cherokee is a 5.7-liter overhead valve V8 with a Multi-Displacement System, which automatically deactivates four cylinders when the vehicle is not using all of its cylinders. It only takes forty milliseconds for the switch from four to eight cylinders, so you won’t notice any difference.

375-horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain

In July, Jeep teased a future 375-horsepower plug in hybrid powertrain for the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This hybrid vehicle uses a 2.0-liter gasoline engine paired with two electric motors for a combined total output of 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Unlike its gas-only sibling, the Grand Cherokee 4xe also uses a torque-assist system.

The Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid is available as an option on models above the Altitude trim. This powertrain combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for an impressive 375-horsepower output. The Grand Cherokee 4xe features standard four-wheel drive and is available at a base price of $38,325 (for the Laredo model).

Standard four-wheel drive

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with several different 4WD systems. The best is the Quadra-Drive II, which employs a transfer case similar to the Quadra-Trac II. It shifts power from the front wheels to the rear wheels when traction is reduced. The difference between the two systems is their sophistication and performance. The standard system provides adequate four-wheel-drive capability and is recommended for drivers who don’t intend to travel off-road.

The Grand Cherokee is standard with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning. All other models are available with a ProTech II package that includes automatic emergency braking and full-speed forward collision warning. Both systems also feature automatic wipers and lane-keeping assist. The Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a five-star overall crash test rating. The rear-wheel-drive Grand Cherokee earns a three-star rollover rating.

Fuel economy

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee is expected to offer a combined fuel economy of 25 mpg highway and 21 mpg city. The new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine is expected to provide impressive fuel efficiency in the SUV segment. Its best-in-class towing capacity of 7,000 pounds is also a plus. The hybrid version is also on its way. Fuel economy estimates for this model are still preliminary, but EPA estimates the hybrid to get 17 mpg combined.

While fuel economy is important for any vehicle, it depends largely on the type of vehicle and its use. Some people will want a powerful engine and advanced towing capability over great gas mileage. A knowledgeable salesperson at a Jeep dealership, such as Maguire Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram FIAT (CDJRF) in Ithaca, can help you choose the right vehicle to fit your needs. Fuel economy and strength of the Jeep Grand Cherokee will depend on the trim level and engine installed in the vehicle.

Trim levels

A midsize SUV has many options to choose from, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee offers seven different trim levels for a wide range of needs. From the base model, which has a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine, to the higher-end, luxurious Rubicon, each trim level has its own benefits. Find out more about the different trim levels by reading our review. We’ll even show you how to compare each one side-by-side.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee comes in multiple trim levels, each of which is equipped with different features and specifications. Each one offers a slightly different mix of features, but they all offer a wide range of safety features and options. The Jeep Grand Cherokee finance department is located in Houston and will assist you with your financing options. Regardless of your financial situation, our team will help you find the best Jeep Grand Cherokee for you. No matter which trim level you choose, you’re sure to find the Jeep Grand Cherokee that will meet your needs and match your style.

Redesign for 2022

The Jeep Grand Cherokee redesign for 2022 retains the design ethos from the previous generation while giving it a youthful and polished face. It also gets a much-needed interior makeover. It does away with the third row and middle-row captain’s chairs. The grille and headlights are also redesigned and will now be shaped differently. The new design also has a more aggressive look, thanks to the addition of LED accents.

The new Grand Cherokee will weigh 250 pounds less than its predecessor. This decrease is due to the increased use of aluminum and high-strength steel in the upper body. The front axle shafts in four-wheel-drive models are now hollow, running through the oil pan, allowing the engine to sit an inch lower. This will help the vehicle’s handling and fuel economy. Jeep is confident in the new design but is still open to feedback.
